The construction

From 17 March, arrival of the special Sculpture Sand:
More than 80 trucks are bringing the Sculpture Sand from Belgium . About 2000 tonnes of sand are needed to build the sculptures and will be brought to Le Touquet by trucks transporting 25 tons each.

The sand will be put in the wooden forms and be compacted using heavy machines (Wackers). All wooden forms have been pre-calculated and the whole stage of compacting is following a technical plan that tells exactly which form comes where.

All forms have an identical height and a block is composed out of several layers. Bit by bit, the site will turn into a surrealistic landscape filled with pyramids.

During these compacting works, the noise is intense. Bulldozers, Caterpillar cranes and Wackers compete to be the loudest; all sounds mingle into a cacophony crying out loud: “We are at work”

What a difference once the compacting is finished! Silence reigns, muscles change into artistic inspiration, machines change into carvers. The wooden forms are being taken away, layer by layer, thus exposing the nude sand to the desires of the artists.
